I don't know about the rest of my bloggy friends but I am being inundated with spam from people leaving anonymous comments. And not good anonymous comments like "Hey I just found your blog and really love it" or "That is a great project!" more like "Plz reply dumbells expand Bowflex" or "Come check out my blog many XXX party girls"
UGH!!! That is my foot stamping UGH!
When I check my blog and see there are new comments, it is always such a thrill. Then I see 98% of them are spam- and it is very disheartening. Unfortunately, not all of the anonymous comments are being caught in the spam folder, so I have to move or delete them.
I don't want to go back to word verification because it is a pain in the tuckas! I don't know about you but I have a hard time with these. Not to mention annoying!
I am already disenchanted with my blog- ok well life- which is why I barely post anymore. Add to this the spam factor and maybe it is time to pack it in?
I don't want to, I feel such a connection to my fellow bloggers. When I have my head in the game so to speak I love my blog as an outlet to share what is going on in my life, my house and my garden.
I suppose I could change the settings to approve each comment. Or eliminate the option for anonymous comments. I hesitate to do so because not everyone has an Open ID or Gmail account. I wanted my blog to be easy access to any reader.
Anyone have any tips for managing the spam? And for goodness sakes PLEASE let us hope I don't end up with another 50 anonymous comments....

It is a bummer isn't it. I have had the same problem and did add back the dreaded word verification. Didn't want the porn sites or other on my site. I even had one spammer criticize my blog post title as part of their spammy comment...that was the last straw for me. I guess you could make all comments have to be approved but I just decided it was better to have no comments or less comments over having to even sort through the dumb spam. I hope you don't give up. The Bloggy world would be a bit darker without you in it.

Thanks Debbie! It helps to know what others are doing. And you made my day. Thank you for the kind words!
DeleteTake care,

The blogger dashboard has a spam setting. I set mine to email notification of post and then I must approve the comment post. It is a little annoying to do this, but I figured from the beginning it would save unwanted post responses.
ReplyDeleteI am still debating if I want to approve everything. The last couple of days the spam filters have been working great and have caught everything.
DeleteDon't go away, we all luv ya! It doesn't have to be every day that you post just post when you feel like it. Garden season is coming soon! You'll be inspired in no time.
ReplyDeleteAs for spam, yeah, I'm getting more as well. Most of the time the filters catch it. I hesitate to turn off anonymous too, because I have some commenters like that, the ones that leave nice comments but don't have accounts they can sign in with.
If I DO do something (ha I said do do, LOL), I'll just go back to moderated comments.
haha do-do. FM you crack me up. Yeah I am trying to make a point to post weekly. As gardening time rolls around I am sure it will be more. I do have some projects gearing up so who knows maybe I will find my rhythm AND inspiration again.
DeleteI found your blog through Two Men and a Little Farm. I don't blog so have no tips for you but I love finding new blogs like yours. Hope you keep blogging.
ReplyDeleteThank you Candace and welcome! I have decided not to pack it in. I am most likely going to change my setting to approval all comments.
