Gardening, Planter Pretties and Other News

Hello My dear Bloggies! I have been remiss in posting on my blog but have been lurking about reading every one's posts.  I seem to have very little energy for any kind of home projects. My focus has been on school (as it should be). It isn't necessarily hard but it is time consuming. I apparently have a very poor ability to manage my work life balance. Which has carried over to my school-life balance. Eye on the prize, right?

We have had such unusual weather this year. Rain nearly every other day and cool. The gardens are slow to grow and produce. Still it beats the horrible heat wave and drought like conditions from last year! Even though we had torrential rains 2 days ago the plants were still quite thirsty. Nothing like a nice long drink from the sprinkler.

Since we lived so many years in rentals (apartments and town homes) before purchasing our home,  I was limited in my forays in gardening.  Enter container gardening! I was known as the tomato lady in our apartment complex because my balcony/ patio was covered with containers. I grew everything from flowers, herbs, and vegetables in those containers. Even then my love of hands in soil was strong. I still grow some leaf lettuce in a container near my kitchen despite having a large backyard garden.

My monster sized sage plant that survived from last summer.

I STILL love planter boxes and pots for my flowers. You can play with color, shape and texture. You can plant all sorts of combinations and try it for a season- or more.

I used an rusted metal fruit basket lined with coconut fiber and nestled this inside a old curbside found crock. I planted a dracena spike, sweet woodruff, petunias and salvia.

In the planter bench near my pool, I planted penstemon, dracena and a trailing stonecrop.

This is 1 of 2 hanging baskets over the planter bench. I combine petunias, salvia and a lemon colored vinca. I love the red and yellow combination.

In other exciting news my daughter and son-in-law (referred to as the kids from here on out) have bought their 1st home!  A darling little 3 bedroom, move in ready ranch home. It has a somewhat rustic curbside appeal.. The kids are over the moon and we couldn't be more happy for them. There isn't much need for the house to have DIY since it is completely redone but that's a good thing for where they are in their lives right now. ALTHOUGH she does have 1 project already in mind--she is going to paint her shutters more of a country red because she hates the uneven wood tone.

This little barrel beauty is my planter arrangement for the kids since their house is sadly lacking landscaping. They won't have much time initially to do any landscaping and my daughter asked me to make her a planter. I mixed perennials and some annuals. My hope is the perennials will find a new home somewhere around their house. The barrel has Deep Rose Begonia, Summer Idol Geranium, Stella de Oro daylily, Shasta daisy, red and yellow petunias, sweet potato vine and a tropical filler (which I don't know the name).   Won't this look adorable on their porch?

Anyone else have exciting news to share?

More from my garden

A continued tour of my gardens

My planter bench has coleus, petunias and blackeyed susan vine.

♪ ♫ I never promised you a rose garden ♫ ♪
These were hacked out of my friend Pam's garden. She being a non gardener didn't understand why I was so worked up when I found out she was throwing these away. So I drove over to the Milford area and came back with a carload of of half dead roses, fountain grass and succulent ground cover. I am happy to say not only did they all survive--they thrived.

These transplanted orange lilies are from my friend Vicki. She hauled these (and quite a few other plants) in her van last July when she came back to the Cincy area to her mom's.  She said I have a few plants few you, haha It filled my little Ford Focus. I was a sight to behold cruising down the highway with plants everywhere. It definitely garnered more than a few second glances. It is unfortunate there are no pictures.

Lovely lavender. This is my replacement plant because 2 yrs ago the hubbs thought he would "help me weed" when I was laid up really sick and he wiped out my 5 yr established lavender bed. URGG I could have just throttled him. That is why all of the planting beds are delineated with rock or boards. And I recently began installing plant markers. I love Love  LOVE lavender!!

These aren't in my garden but I really like them. My daughter and I went Home Depot and she found all the succulents on clearance for $0.50-$1. So I bought them (obviously) and potted them up. The red pot is hers. The metallic vessel she made for us when she was in high school. Maybe 10 yrs ago.

I have some planter boxes on my back patio (some mint and herbs--which smell soooo good!) and something caught my eye.

So I guess I am not the only one likes all my plants!

A Sunday Stroll around my yard

Happy Sunday Y'all!

What a BEAUTIFUL morning!  The hubbs was up early to go fishing so I decided to head out in the garden in the wee hours this morning. 6:30 am found me groggy and bleary eyed but I am glad I was out before the waves of heat came rolling in.

I took the dogs out with me but decided Chubbs could be my garden buddy this  morning. He is 10 and  his favorite thing to do is his impression of a speed bump. Except today he was rather alert.

Here he is inspecting my raised bed's project

Zombie dog and killer garden mist! lol

The morning mist on a grape leaf.

If I can keep the critters off of them--I may get some yummy grapes this year!

My outta control perennial bed.

Dew covered Asiatic Lily

Evil sneaky weed planning to overthrow my garden bed. It must be stopped!

I thought this plant is a daisy--but now I am not sure. oops!

My Cone-flowers are as tall as me.

It just screams HELLO!!

Butterfly bush beginning to flower

A thirsty petunia
Coleus

A perfect dew covered rose.

I have lots more to share but I am tired. Last night was a very late night 3am and back up at 6:30am. ugh! Then this afternoon I had a 70 minute drive each way to attend my nephews graduation. I am glad to be at home in the AC and it is quiet. Umm I think I need a nap! So I am gonna go dream about all my fruits, veggies and flowers. What is growing in your yard?

Hey there Romeo

Picture it...Sicily 1924...oops-sorry- Golden Girl flashback. Anyone else like that show?  I love that show. Still after 25 years. I will be channel surfing and if I come across this show, it doesn't matter if I have seen the episode a time (or ten) before. I will stop and watch it..again.
ANY-HOO... The hubbs and I were installing the flower boxes. I had the hubbs check the upstairs brackets because they were looking a tad rusted and unsafe. All I could picture was me being ker-splatted by a flower box. Like the house crushing witch scene in  the Wizard of Oz . Yep that's the one

Instead of house killing the witch it would be death by flower box.  Not saying I'm a witch (or anything that rhymes with it...) All that would remain would be my  dirty garden clogs and tattered gloves.
So the hubbs is slinging this 24 ft. ladder around (which is making me kind of nervous) and tells me to open the bedroom window. So I run up the stairs (ok I walk briskly)  and hear such a clatter, flung open the sash  and  to see what's the matter....hahahaha--just kidding!. The hubbs is climbing up the ladder, lugging the planter box with him and all I could think to say is, "Hey there Romeo".

We had a brief dialog and I assure you it was not Shakespearean in nature. It went a little something like this...
me: "hey there Romeo"
hubbs: "hey there Tonya-poo-poo (Yes that is actually one my nicknames)
me: "no it's Juliet. as in Shakespeare"
hubbs: What?
me: "Did you ever pay attention in school?" "You know?? ROMEO AND JULIET!"
hubbs: "Oh yeah!" hahahhaha
me:"UGH!"
Of course then I laughed because the whole thing was goofy.

So the one time a guy ever climbs up a ladder to my bedroom window--it's my 52 yr old hubbs lugging a planter box and we botched Romeo and Juliet. But I guess that's ok because maybe it should have been a Rapunzel scene? Or Roxanne? Anyway here are the pics of the flower box in place.

The  hubbs assured me the bolts are ok. AND he promised next year I can have new flower box brackets. Good because I am gonna get those heavy duty forged iron ones...just so I know they are nice and secure!

I may have a plant habit...

Besides my veggie garden
I have so much stuff to plant but it won't stop raining!

I have an overabundance of lettuce, radishes and spinach
 grapevine

Garage Bed

Shed Bed

This is my ER  plop bed. All the ailing plants get plopped here to see if they will survive. If so, then I move them.

Bird bed

I have acquired  some strawberries, raspberries and  blackberries-which still need planted but I will be assembling the raised bed tomorrow.

Oh then there are the planter boxes.
This is 1 of 4. (They are all slightly different depending on exposure)
 Oh yeah, the planter bench.

Herbs I need to pot up. I am thinking about one of those tipsy pot planters. That would look kinda cool!

Extra petunias and coleus I need to tuck in somewhere!

And I have no ideal where I can fit these in.  But I got them buy one get one free. The hubbs said "you know you will run out of room, RIGHT?" um yeah.....

Enough outside stuff. (I have quite a few house plants too) ...Hello, plants anonymous? I think I have a problem...

P.S. That really isn't all the outside stuff...I just felt guilty so I stopped taking pictures
